    Standard E-glass Cloth

The most common style of glass cloth used by most surfboard builders all around the world is E-glass cloth in 4oz and 6oz. This 4oz fabric maninly used for surfboard is because of its great tensile strength and performance. Also it is the most cost effective for the manufacturer and the customer.

During glassing a surfboard, this lightweight fiberglass cloth is always be laid up in a number of combinations. For example, builders often use 2 layers of 4oz e-glass cloth on the deck and one layer on the bottom for standard shortboards building. But for heavier footed surfer and on many alternative/retro shapes as well as some longboards, builders will blend a layer of 6oz and 4oz on the deck, then a layer of 4 oz or 6oz on the bottom.

If you need a little more strength you can do two layers of 6oz on the deck and one bottom. This is also common for longboard building which you need more strength but still want the weight down.

Our 4oz fabric is called 6522 e-glass fabric which is weighed at 125g/m2 and 0.12mm thick. It is woven in plain weave in 9.6 / 8.7 thread count. Density of 4oz fabric is different around the world. But its high strength and quality can total meet your standard. Out customers from America, Australia, Brazil and Spain all confirm its quality. Standard width is 27.5 inches. Generally used on short boards with both Polyester and Epoxy resins.

Fiberglass cloth is fire resistant and can be used below 550℃ continuously. Besides, it is chemical resistant, corrosion resistant, anti UV, tear resistant. Except for boat, yacht building, it is also used for electrical wire insulation warp.

    How To Glass A Surfboard

Glassing is a important step in which layers of fiberglass fabric are applied to the surfboard. Typically 3 layers of 4oz or 6oz fiber glass cloth, two on the top and one on the bottom are applied to the surfboard.

First, pour 2/3 resin in a pool down the center of the surfboard. Then moving the pool of resin out to the edges with squeegee. Move the resin but not scrape it so the fibreglass cloth remains wet out enough. When the top is wet out, pulling the resin down and around the rails, from the stringer to the edge.

Look at the sides to see if there are any spots of cloth that still seem white. If so, use the leftover resin in the bucket as needed to fully saturate everywhere. When the whole board is wet out, check the deck to remove pooling by your squeegee.

Please work fast and don't spend to much time on details. And you must stop once the resin begins to jell.
