Three Phase Decanter Centrifuge for Insect Oil Rendering

Three Phase Decanter Centrifuge for Insect Oil Rendering
Description

The Three Phase Decanter Centrifuge for Insect Oil Rendering continuously separates insect oil, aqueous liquid, and concentrated protein-rich solids from conditioned insect biomass slurry.

It is suitable for black soldier fly larvae, mealworms, crickets, and other insect-processing materials after crushing, heating, enzymatic treatment, or wet rendering.

Typical Applications
  • Black soldier fly larvae oil recovery
  • Mealworm oil extraction
  • Insect wet-rendering slurry separation
  • Defatted insect protein production
  • Insect paste and press-liquor treatment
  • Oil recovery from processing residues
  • Protein-rich solids concentration
  • Insect process-water clarification

Insect Rendering Challenges

High Protein and Fine Solids

Protein particles, chitin, fiber, and cell debris can increase slurry viscosity and affect liquid clarity.

Stable Oil-Water Emulsion

Proteins and fine particles may stabilize the emulsion. Heating, enzymes, or suitable conditioning may improve separation.

Variable Oil Content

Oil content varies with insect species, growth stage, moisture, and upstream processing.

Temperature Control

Suitable heating reduces oil viscosity, but excessive temperature may affect oil and protein quality.

Hygienic Processing

Food-grade materials, sanitary seals, polished surfaces, and effective cleaning are required for sensitive applications.

Insect Oil Rendering Solution

Insect Biomass
→ Crushing / Heating
→ Feed Tank
→ Three Phase Decanter
→ Oil + Water + Solids

Recovered Oil → Filtration / Storage
Water Phase → Recovery / Treatment
Solids → Drying / Meal Production

Peony Can Provide

  • Feed testing and selection
  • Heated tank and feed pump
  • Adjustable phase interface
  • Food-grade wetted parts
  • CIP cleaning
  • PLC and dual-VFD control

How the Decanter Centrifuge Works

1. Conditioned Biomass Feeding

Conditioned insect slurry enters the rotating bowl.

Agitation maintains uniform temperature and solids concentration.

2. Solids Sedimentation

Centrifugal force moves protein solids, chitin, fiber, and dense particles toward the bowl wall.

A concentrated solids layer forms.

3. Oil-Water Separation

The lighter insect oil remains closer to the bowl center.

The heavier aqueous phase forms a separate outer liquid layer.

4. Continuous Solids Conveying

The screw conveyor transports settled solids toward the conical discharge end.

Protein-rich solids discharge continuously.

5. Three-Phase Discharge

Recovered oil and aqueous liquid leave through separate outlets.

The concentrated solids are discharged for drying or further processing.

Main Advantages

Continuous Insect Oil Recovery

Separates oil continuously from wet-rendered insect biomass.

Improved Oil Yield

Adjustable speed and phase-interface control help reduce oil loss.

Protein-Rich Solids Recovery

Concentrates defatted solids for meal, protein, or other downstream products.

Reduced Downstream Load

Removes solids and oil before polishing, drying, or wastewater treatment.

Sanitary Configuration

Food-grade contact parts and CIP options support hygienic processing.

What Data Is Needed for Selection?

Please provide:

  • Insect species and process stage
  • Oil, water, and solids content
  • Feed temperature and viscosity
  • Particle size
  • Required capacity
  • Oil and solids quality targets

FAQ

Can the centrifuge process whole insect larvae directly?

Normally no. The material should first be crushed, heated, or otherwise conditioned into a pumpable slurry.

Is heating required before separation?

Heating is usually helpful because it releases oil and reduces viscosity. The temperature should match the required oil and protein quality.

Can it separate oil from a protein-stabilized emulsion?

Possibly, but strong emulsions may require enzymatic treatment, controlled heating, or other conditioning before centrifugation.

Can the recovered solids be used for insect protein meal?

Potentially. Moisture, residual oil, microbial condition, chitin content, and final product requirements should be evaluated.

Does the recovered insect oil require further purification?

Usually yes. Fine filtration, polishing centrifugation, moisture removal, or deodorization may be required depending on the final use.
