Some mandrels rotate, such as shaft of railway vehicles, but some mandrels don’t rotate, such as supporting the pulley shaft, etc. Transmission shaft is mainly used to transfer torque and not under bending moment, such as crane mobile mechanism of long axis, the car's drive shaft, etc.

Its material is the carbon steel or alloy steel, but nodular cast iron or alloy cast iron is also used. The ability generally depends on intensity and rigidity, when high speed, depends on the vibration stability.

In the machining workshop, there are lots of heavy machining equipment such as heavy horizontal lathes, deep hole drilling, boring machines, and grinding machines, etc.
