It is bitter in flavour and neutral in nature, acting on the liver and spleen channels. Owing to the property of bitterness and neutrality, it has relatively strong effects of dispersion and purgation. It acts on both blood and Qi systems. It has effects of relieving blood and qi stasis, and mass in the abdomen, promoting circulation of Qi, removing food stagnancy, and relieving pain. It is used to treat amenorrhea, abdominal pain caused by stasis of blood and Qi, mass in the abdomen, abdominal distention due to dyspepsia, and other syndromes

For treatment of amenorrhea, abdominal mass in women, it is usually used in combination with Rhizoma Zedoariaae, Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae, Lumbricus, and other herbs to remove blood stasis and resolve abdominal mass, such as Sanleng Wan, written in ¡°Standards of women¡¯s Diseases¡±; For treatment of blood and Qi stasis in the liver channel, distention and stabbing pain in costal regions, it can be used together with Radix Bupleuri, Rhizome Cyperi, Radix Salviae miltiorrhizae, Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Radix Curcumae, and other herbs having the effect of removing Qi and blood stasis to relieve pain.
