Floating pneumatic fenders were developed in Japan in 1958, and they are manufactured according to ISO 17357. Sometimes, the fenders should be surrounded by tires and chains to provide additional protection. These fenders are also available in other types, such as sling type rubber fenders and rib type fenders.

Floating pneumatic fenders behave fundamentally differently from solid rubber type fenders. They use pressurized air to absorb the impact energy - based on pneumatic principles.

Pneumatic ship fenders are mainly classified into three types as follows:

1. Pneumatic Ship Fender with Chain and Tyre Net

With chain and tire net covering the fender body, the pneumatic ship fender can reduce the damage of friction and abrasion caused by direct contact. Therefore it’s widely used in places with complicated and unstable tide variation, such as ship-to-ship(STS) and ship-to-dock(STD) operations. In addition, as for the protective tire, Jerryborg offers four types of tires with different sizes and thicknesses for customers to choose from.

2. Sling Type Pneumatic Ship Fender

Sling type pneumatic ship fender will be connected with a guy chain or guy rope with a lifting device on both ends.

3. Hydro Pneumatic Type Ship Fender

Hydropneumatic ship fender is usually used as a bumper with submarines and other semi-submersible platforms. It can be installed vertically in the water cause it’s filled with air and water inside and equipped with a counterweight.

The floating pneumatic fenders are composed of three vulcanized layers, each of which provides an important function in the structure and service life of the fender. The three layers are:

(1) the outer rubber layer
(2) the reinforced tire cord layer
(3) the inner rubber layer
