Piezoelectric ceramic chip has a certain polarization direction, so there is a certain electric field. In the absence of external electric field, each domain is disorderly distributed on the crystal, and their polarization effect is cancelled each other. Therefore, the internal polarization strength of the original piezoelectric ceramic is zero. However, when the voltmeter is connected to two electrodes of the ceramic chip for measurement, the polarization strength inside the ceramic chip cannot be measured.
This is because the polarization intensity in the piezoelectric ceramic chip is always expressed in the form of electric dipole moment, that is, there is a positive bound charge at one end of the piezoelectric ceramic and a negative binding charge at the other end. Due to the binding charge, a layer of free charge from outside is adsorbed on the electrode surface of piezoelectric ceramic. These free charges are opposite to the binding charges in the piezoelectric ceramic chip, but the number of them is equal to each other. Therefore, the voltmeter can not measure the degree of polarization in the piezoelectric ceramic chip.
