How does a diesel engine oil pump work?
The engine block and head are honeycombed with channels for channeling lubricants and coolants. The oil pumps forces oil through these channels to lubricate the whole system. Commonly the oil is pumped from the sump, via a mesh filter to remove larger bits of debris, around the engine.
What is the function of oil pump?
The oil pump provides the force that delivers oil through galleries and passages around the engine. Oil pumps are usually either inside the oil pan and driven by a camshaft or outside the pan and driven by a crankshaft.
If the oil level is too low, the oil pump will have to deal with extra friction due to lack of lubrication. This will cause mechanical problems and warping of various parts in the pump, which will eventually cause the pump to fail.
