What is the difference between 302 and 304 stainless steel?

Like grade 304, alloy 302 is an austenitic stainless steel alloy.

Therefore, they share certain elements, which is what gives them the same austenitic microstructure.

However, they fall into different grades solely because of the modification of the constitution of the elements.

For instance, the content of carbon in grade 302 is a max of 0.15% carbon, with a max value of 0.8% in stainless steel alloy 304.

The lower content of carbon in austenitic steel grade 304 effectively lowers the risk of carbide precipitation, which occurs in alloys that have a higher percentage of carbon in their alloys.

The main benefit of using grade 302 is that this particular stainless steel alloy demonstrates good resistance to solvents, acids as well as resistance to several chemicals.

303 Stainless Steel Material Data Sheet

AISI 303 is a non magnetic austenitic stainless steel and a modified version of Alloy 304 with addition of Sulphur to improve machinability.

It has improved chemistry as compared to 18/8 Stainless Steel to display extra machinining performance maintaining good mechanical & corrosion properties.
Stainless Steel 303 offers excellant toughness though sulphur addition imparts cutback to some limit.

NO.4 Polish Stainless Steel sheets

No.4 finish is duller than the other common finishes, 2B and BA and is generally used where lower reflectivity or gloss is required and where welds and other fabrication marks are to be refinished to match the original surface.

This is not possible with 2B and difficult with BA.

A 'No 4' surface finish stainless steel sheet or coil is produced by cutting the surface with abrasive belts to remove a very small amount of metal without affecting its thickness.
