On cranes, a good light level and good light quality are very important for safety.
People working on or in the vicinity of cranes always run the risk of being hit by the crane or the load.
Scientific studies show that better light leads to safer working conditions. Especially in those cases where there is interaction between man and machine.
Then it is important that visibility is good. Wearing a safety helmet, shoes and a reflective jacket have been mandatory in the vicinity of cranes and in ports for a long time now.
However, often there is are no safe light conditions.
On many cranes with conventional fixtures, the light level was adequate when these fixtures were newly installed.
However, the light output of the lamps decreases over the years significantly.
In the case of gas discharge lamps such as SON and HPI, depreciation of the light output can decline as much as 50% or more of the original light output.
In addition, luminaires are contaminated by environmental pollution, such as rain, insects and salty air. Dust and dirt will burn into the reflector, which will turn brown and will no longer reflect properly.
Furthermore, the cover glass will get dirty. Reasons that make the efficiency of the fixture decrease significantly.
