The basic principles of filtration include the relationship between pore size, flow rate, surface area and pressure difference. Pore size is the main factor in the filter's ability to remove smaller particles. The smaller the pore size in the medium, the smaller the particles that can be reliably removed.

Relative to the flow rate and surface area, the pore size cannot be too small, otherwise the pressure difference will increase to the extent that the bypass valve is opened and solid contaminants are allowed to completely avoid the filter.
