317L Stainless Steel Composition

The composition of this Stainless Steel Grade 317L consists of 18-20% chromium and 11-15% nickel. The rest of the composition comprises iron, molybdenum, sulfur, silicon, and nitrogen. This low-carbon alloy also contains traces of phosphorus and manganese.

317L Stainless Steel Physical Properties

This ss 317L has a ductile yield strength between 40ksi (275MPa) and 90ksi (620MPa). Its melting point ranges from 2550°F to 2635°F (1399°C to 1454°C). It has a density of 0.29 lb/in³ (8 g/cm³). Additionally, it has an electrical resistivity of 72 μΩ·m at 20°C (68°F).

317L Stainless Steel Mechanical Properties

The tensile strength for this grade ranges from 65 ksi to 85 ksi (450 MPa to 590 MPa). Its modulus of elasticity is 28 x 10³ ksi (193 GPa), while its thermal expansion coefficient range is 10-6 – 10-5/K at 32–212 °F (0–100 °C). Its thermal conductivity is 9 W/(m·K) at 212 °F(100 °C).

grade 317l is an austenitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum grade of stainless steel with excellent corrosion resistance and formability. It is well suited for various industrial applications such as chemical, petrochemical, fertilizer, power generation, food processing, water supply systems, and medical instruments. This grade of stainless steel has exceptional resistance to sulfuric acid, making it an ideal choice for harsh environment applications such as the lining of tanks and vessels exposed to this corrosive substance. 317L stainless steel also has very good weldability and is used extensively in large structures and small components where toughness and weldability are important criteria.
