DN300 Class150 Flanged Metal Bellows Expansion Joint / Expansion Joint Metal

1. Expansion joints(compensators)

  • Introduction

Expansion joints, commonly known as compensators, are comprised of one or more bellows as the main elastic component, along with connectors, supports, flanges, conduits, and additional accessories. Installed on vessel shells or pipelines, they compensate for stresses induced by temperature variations and mechanical vibrations. By utilizing the bellows' expansion and contraction, they accommodate dimensional changes caused by thermal expansion and contraction, as well as axial, lateral, and angular displacements of pipelines and vessels. They also serve for noise and vibration reduction in heating supply systems.

To prevent deformation or damage from thermal expansion in heating pipelines, compensators are installed to absorb thermal expansion, reducing stress on pipeline walls and forces exerted on valves or support structures.

With advantages such as reliable operation, good performance, and a compact structure, expansion joints find wide application in chemical engineering, metallurgy, nuclear energy, and other industries. Vessel expansion joints commonly include U-shaped, Ω-shaped, and C-shaped designs, while pipeline expansion joints are categorized based on structural compensation as universal, pressure balanced, hinged, and gimbal expansion joints.

Main ItemClassificationDescription

Metal Expansion Joint

ElbowExpansion Joint

Bend the pipe into a U-shaped or other shape, also known as tension bends, are a type of expansion joint that utilizes the elastic deformation ability of the form to compensate. Its advantages are good strength, long service life, and on-site production. The disadvantages are space-consuming, high steel consumption, and high friction resistance. This type of expansion joint is widely used in various steam piping and long pipes.

Bellows Expansion Joint

The bellows expansion joint utilizes metal bellows to allow axial expansion/contraction and slight bending in pipelines. Protective rods/rings and guide supports prevent overcompensation. Angular and lateral joints handle rotational and lateral deformations. Advantages include space-saving, material efficiency, standardization, and mass production, but with a shorter lifespan. Commonly used in low-temp, low-pressure short pipelines. With advancing technology, its application range is broadening, now suitable for systems up to 6.0 MPa.

Slip-Type Expansion Joint

The slip-type expansion joint features inner and outer sleeves that can axially move relative to each other, sealed with a stuffing box. Composed mainly of sleeves, shells, and sealing materials, it compensates for axial expansion and rotation in pipelines. Compact yet highly compensatory, it suits hot water, steam, and grease media. Its inner sleeve, linked to the pipeline, employs a high-performance self-sealing dynamic mechanism, freely sliding within the shell as the pipeline expands or contracts. A new synthetic seal material, resistant to high temperatures, corrosion, and aging, ensures leak-proof performance, enduring temperatures from -40 to 150 degrees Celsius (or up to 350 degrees in special cases). This joint not only facilitates axial sliding but also prevents internal medium leakage.

Non-metallic Expansion Joint

Rubber Expansion Joint

Composed of rubber and rubber-fiber composite materials, steel flanges, sleeves, and insulation materials, it is mainly used for flexible connections between various fans and ducts. Its functions include shock absorption, noise reduction, sealing, medium resistance, easy displacement and installation. It is an ideal accessory for shock absorption, noise reduction, smoke and dust removal in the field of environmental protection.

Fabric Expansion Joint

Fabric expansion joints, crafted from fiber fabric, rubber, and other high-temperature resistant materials, offer compensation for vibrations and deformations in fans and ducts. They can accommodate axial, lateral, and angular movements, boasting features like zero thrust, simplified support design, corrosion and heat resistance, noise and vibration reduction. Ideal for hot blast pipes and smoke/dust pipelines in power plants, the non-metallic compensator's fabric and insulation cotton inherently absorb sound and isolate vibrations, significantly reducing noise and vibrations in boilers, fans, and other systems. Its simple structure, lightweight design, and ease of maintenance further enhance its appeal.
