PVD coating

During the process, first of all the stainless steel is cleaned to make sure that the coating will bond well. The steel is then placed in a vacuum chamber with a “target” metal; this will be used to create the coating. A high vacuum level is needed in the coating chamber, then a small amount of argon gas is introduced. A high voltage circuit is used in order for the stainless steel and target to bond or adhere. This allows the argon ions to bombard the target to release atoms of the target metal, which are deposited on the stainless steel substrate as the coating. This PVD process is called sputtering; resulting in the deposition of plasma on the stainless steel surface which gives it its new strength and shine.

The coloured surface coatings that can be obtained using PVD include: gold (TiN), rose gold (ZrN), bronze (TiAlN), blue (TiAlN), black (TiAlCN), as well as a dark red (ZrN). This ceramic coating which is produced is very thin, making the texture of the underlying finish still visible. These PVD colours will not fade over time and have the benefit of being more uniform in appearance and more abrasion-resistant than colouring which is done by the electrochemical processes.

PVD colored stainless steel sheet is available in a wide range of colors. This process applies a titanium and nitrogen-based ceramic coating to the surface. Process and alloying variations are used to obtain a wide range of colors.

It is commonly used to color window glass; faucets and hardware; consumer products; and jewelry. It is more scratch resistant than electrochemical coloring but it can be damaged. PVD can be applied over any stainless steel.

Mirror-polished stainless steel: properties and advantages

In principle, we differentiate here between technical applications, which, for instance, require the requested surfaces to have the lowest possible roughness (Ra value).

Such properties play a major role especially in applications like container- and silo-manufacturing, mechanical engineering, food and medical technology, where adhesion to the inox surfaces has to be avoided by using material that is as smooth as possible.

Other customers request a certain reflectivity from the metal finish, for example in the lighting industry.

Another increasingly popular use of mirror-polished stainless steel sheets is found in architecture, shopfitting, yacht and shipbuilding, where the focus is very strongly on an optically first-class result in terms of the visual quality of the stainless steel sheets.

In addition to a flawless appearance, more advantages of a mirror finish are the low weight ratio compared to glass mirrors, the very good workability and, immensely important when used in public buildings or other highly frequented locations such as train stations, airports and others, mirror-finish stainless steel plates are unbreakable, fireproof and vandal-proof.
