The pellet mill die, commonly known as the pellet mill ring die or stationary die, is a core component in a pellet mill, playing a pivotal role in the entire pellet production operation. This die serves multiple essential functions. For shaping and compaction, once the feed material is introduced into the pellet mill, the rotation of the roller shells forces the material through the small holes in the die. Through this process, the feed material is transformed into the desired pellet shape and compacted to meet the specific density requirements. Regarding extrusion, the passage of the feed material through the die holes is what gives the pellets their characteristic cylindrical shape and size. The characteristics of the die holes, including their size and configuration, are decisive factors in determining the final dimensions of the pellets.

Heat generation is another important aspect. When the feed material is pushed through the die, the resulting friction and mechanical work generate heat. This heat activates the gelatinization of starches and binders, contributing to a more stable and unified pellet structure. In addition, due to the continuous friction and pressure from the feed material, the pellet mill die experiences significant abrasive wear. To address this, it is typically manufactured from wear-resistant materials such as high-chrome cast iron or special alloys. These materials ensure that the die can endure the tough working environment and maintain its shape and precise dimensions over time.
