Decanting can separate solid-liquid mixtures or mixtures of two immiscible liquids. This process involves carefully pouring a liquid from one container to another, making it effective for separating immiscible liquids such as oil and water.

The bowl and screw make high-speed rotation with a certain differential speed between them. The materials enter the bowl from the feed tube. Under centrifugal force, the liquid of higher specific weight accumulates on the bowl's inner walls and is discharged through the centripetal pump or overflow plate. Lighter liquids form an inner liquid ring, stick to heavy liquid surfaces, and discharge from the overflow channel. The spiral material pusher continuously pushes solids to the bowl's taper end where they discharge from the residue outlet after drying.
