Optical Fiber Composite Overhead ground Wire (OPGW) is a type of overhead ground wire containing optical fibers, featuring multiple functions such as overhead ground wire and optical communication. It is mainly used in communication lines of 110kV and above and newly built overhead high-voltage transmission systems. It can also be used to replace the existing overhead ground wires of the old overhead high-voltage transmission system, add optical communication lines, conduct short-circuit currents and provide lightning protection. OPGW optical cables, wrapped with metal wires, are more reliable, stable and secure. As the overhead ground wire and the optical cable are integrated into one, compared with other types of optical cables, it not only shortens the construction period but also saves construction costs. In addition, if OPGW is made of aluminum-clad steel wire or aluminum alloy wire twisted together, it is equivalent to setting up a good conductor overhead ground wire, which can bring multiple benefits such as reducing the latent power supply current of the transmission line, lowering the power frequency overvoltage, and improving the interference and dangerous impact of power lines on communication lines. Due to the characteristics of optical fibers such as anti-electromagnetic interference and light weight, they can be installed on the top of transmission line towers without having to consider the optimal hanging position and electromagnetic corrosion issues. Therefore, OPGW features high reliability, superior mechanical performance and relatively low cost. This technology is particularly suitable and economical when laying new or replacing existing ground wires. Special structures can be customized according to user requirements.

  1. For lines with high voltage exceeding 110kv, the step spacing is relatively large (generally over 250M);
  2. Easy to maintain, it is easy to solve the problem of line crossing, and its mechanical characteristics can meet the requirements of large line crossing.
  3. The outer layer of OPGW is made of metal armor, which has no effect on high-voltage erosion and degradation.
  4. OPGW must be powered off during construction, resulting in significant power outage losses. Therefore, OPGW should be used in newly built high-voltage lines of 110kv or above. In the performance indicators of OPGW, the greater the short-circuit current, the more good conductors are needed for armor, which correspondingly reduces the tensile strength. Under the condition of a certain tensile strength, to increase the short-circuit current capacity, the metal cross-sectional area must be increased, which leads to an increase in cable diameter and cable weight. Therefore, strict requirements should be imposed on the strength indicators of the line towers during laying.
