1. Controlling Air/Fuel Mixture Intake
The intake valve regulates the flow of the air-fuel mixture (in gasoline engines) or fresh air (in diesel engines) into the combustion chamber. It opens during the intake stroke of the engine cycle, allowing the mixture/air to be drawn into the cylinder as the piston moves downward. When closed, it seals the combustion chamber to prevent leakage during the compression and power strokes. This precise timing ensures the cylinder receives the optimal volume of air/fuel needed for efficient combustion.

2. Sealing the Combustion Chamber
When closed, the intake valve forms a tight seal against its corresponding intake valve seat (e.g., part 6127-11-1335). This seal is critical to:

Preventing compressed air/fuel mixture from escaping during the compression stroke, which would reduce compression pressure and engine power.
Stopping high-pressure exhaust gases from flowing backward into the intake manifold during the exhaust stroke.
