How Trailer Air Springs Work
1. Air supply: Compressed air from the towing vehicle fills the trailer's air system through a hand-pull hitch.
2. Initial inflation: When the trailer is loaded or connected to the towing vehicle, air flows through the height control valve into the air spring, inflating it to a base pressure.
3. Sensing height: The height control valve continuously monitors the distance between the trailer frame and the axle through its linkage.
4. Maintaining height:
a, Load increase: If the trailer load increases, the frame will sag downward, closer to the axle. The linkage moves the height control valve to the inflate position. This opens a port, allowing more air to flow from the air supply tank into the air spring. The increased air pressure inflates the airbag further, pushing the frame back up to its designated "ride height".
b, Load reduction: If the load is removed, the frame will rise upward, away from the axle. The linkage moves the height control valve to the deflate position. This opens a port, allowing the air in the air spring to exhaust (usually to atmosphere). The reduced air pressure deflates the airbag slightly, stabilizing the frame downward to the specified ride height.
5. Stable Ride Height: Once the trailer frame returns to the preset ride height, the linkage centers the height control valve, closing the inflation and deflation ports. At this point, the air springs are maintained at the precise pressure needed to support the current load and keep it at the *correct* height.
6. Ride Quality: The compressed air in the airbag acts as a cushion, absorbing road shocks more effectively than a hard leaf spring. This allows the cargo to ride more smoothly and reduces stress on the trailer structure.
