How do I know if my cab shocks are bad?

To determine if your vehicle's shock absorbers are damaged, consider the following signs and inspection steps:

Key signs of damaged shock absorbers:

Excessive bouncing:
The vehicle bounces more than 2-3 times after hitting a bumpy surface.

Perform a bounce test: Press firmly on each corner of the vehicle. If the vehicle continues to bounce, the shock absorbers may be worn.

Poor ride comfort:
A jerky, shaky, or unstable ride, especially on uneven surfaces.
The vehicle feels like it "floats" or sways when turning or in crosswinds.

Uneven tire wear:
Check tires for cupping/scalloping (dimpling in the tread) due to loss of contact with the road.
Rule out tire alignment issues by inspecting tire wear.

Fluid leaks:
Inspect shock absorbers for oily residue or traces of oil, especially around the seals or piston rods.

Handling issues:
The front of the vehicle drops when braking hard or the body rolls excessively when turning.
Sluggish or dull steering response.

Common noises:
Clicking, knocking or rattling noises on bumpy roads (may indicate worn shocks or loose brackets).

Visible damage:

Mileage:
Shocks typically lose performance between 50,000 and 100,000 miles. Older shocks may need to be replaced even if there are no obvious symptoms.

Test drive: Drive on known rough roads and observe handling, noise and stability.
