Polymerization (curing) of melamine to formaldehyde occurs in two stages. The first step of methylolation is the addition reaction of formaldehyde to melamine. The reaction cause to the formation methylene and methylene solvent agent bridges that can be cured either thermally or under acidic/alkaline conditions. During curing, chain extension and crosslinking takes place to form an insoluble and infusible three-dimensional network. Stoichiometric ratio of melamine: formaldehyde was chosen as 1/3.
