• Functions

1.Torque Generation: When the operator turns the ignition key or presses the start button, current flows from the battery to the starter’s solenoid (an electromagnetic switch). The solenoid engages, pushing a drive gear (pinion) to mesh with the engine’s flywheel ring gear.

2.Cranking Action: Simultaneously, the solenoid closes the main circuit, sending high current to the starter’s armature (rotating coil). The armature spins, transferring torque through a reduction gear to the pinion, which turns the flywheel—cranking the engine until combustion begins.

3.Automatic Disengagement: Once the engine starts (reaching ~800 rpm), the flywheel spins faster than the starter pinion, causing a one-way clutch in the starter to disengage the pinion from the flywheel—preventing damage to the starter motor.
