With its unique physical properties (such as high porosity, thermal insulation, and sterility), rock wool boards are widely used in agriculture and offer significant advantages over traditional materials.

Core Applications

Rock wool boards are high-quality insulation layers for greenhouse walls and roofs, especially suitable for cold northern regions or planting environments with large temperature differences at high altitudes. Rock wool boards are sandwiched between the steel frame structure of greenhouses to form a sealed insulation layer. Rock wool board enclosures are built around seedling areas and off-season crop planting areas to further narrow the range of temperature fluctuations. In traditional soil cultivation (especially potted plants and local planting in orchards), rock wool boards can be used as soil improvement additives.

Rock wool is made by melting ores such as basalt at temperatures above 1500°C. The production process completely kills pathogenic bacteria, insect eggs, and weed seeds, eliminating soil-borne diseases (e.g., tomato fusarium wilt, cucumber downy mildew) at the source. Its inorganic material property prevents the growth of mold and nematodes, eliminating the need for frequent use of fungicides, reducing pesticide residues, and aligning with the needs of green agriculture.

Advantages

Balanced water and fertilizer retention: Coconut coir retains too much water, easily causing root rot; perlite has poor fertilizer retention, requiring frequent fertilization. However, the pore structure of rock wool (97% porosity) can accurately absorb "water – fertilizer – oxygen," meeting the needs of crops at different growth stages.

High reusability: Rock wool substrates can be reused 2–3 times after cleaning and disinfection, reducing planting costs (coconut coir and perlite are mostly single-use).

Advantages in Operational Convenience and Yield Stability

Easy installation: Rock wool products (e.g., rock wool strips) can be directly spliced into cultivation beds, eliminating the need for complex soil preparation and disinfection processes and shortening the planting preparation cycle.

Strong environmental adaptability: It is not restricted by soil quality or regional climate and can be used stably in saline-alkali lands and arid areas. Additionally, due to the uniform supply of water and fertilizer, crops grow consistently, reducing yield fluctuations by 10%–15%.

Performance Comparison Between Different Thermal Insulation Materials
Insulation MaterialThermal Conductivity (W/(m·K))Fire ResistanceWater ResistanceDurability (Service Life)Environmental FriendlinessSound Insulation PerformanceCore Advantages
Rock Wool Board0.036–0.042Class A (non-combustible); maintains stability at ≤800℃Good (hydrophobic type: water absorption rate ≤5%); prevents condensation5–10 years (corrosion-resistant, non-mildew, no rodent damage)Inorganic material; recyclable after treatment; no harmful gas emissionExcellent (absorbs medium and high-frequency noise effectively)Outstanding fire safety; balanced thermal & sound insulation; suitable for high-humidity environments (e.g., greenhouses, basements)
Glass Wool Board0.038–0.045Class A (non-combustible); decomposes at ≥400℃General (hydrophobic type available; prone to water absorption if damaged)3–8 years (prone to fiber shedding if exposed to moisture for long)Recyclable; but may release tiny fibers if improperly installedGood (focuses on absorbing high-frequency noise)Low cost; lightweight & easy to cut/install; suitable for dry indoor insulation (e.g., interior walls, ceilings)
Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) Board0.039–0.044Class B2 (flammable); melts and drips when burningGood (closed-cell structure; low water absorption)8–15 years (resistant to aging; but prone to deformation under high temperature)Non-toxic; recyclable; but difficult to degrade naturallyPoor (weak sound absorption; easy to transmit noise)High thermal insulation efficiency; lightweight & low cost; suitable for low-temperature indoor/outdoor insulation (e.g., building exterior walls, cold storage)
Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) Board0.028–0.032Class B2 (flammable); slower burning than EPSExcellent (dense closed-cell structure; water absorption rate ≤0.1%)10–20 years (high compressive strength; resistance to aging & deformation)Recyclable; but requires professional treatment for wastePoor (even lower sound absorption than EPS)Ultra-low thermal conductivity; strong water resistance & compressive performance; suitable for wet/high-load environments (e.g., underground garages, roof insulation)
Phenolic Foam Board0.022–0.030Class A (non-combustible); no dripping or toxic gas when burningGood (closed-cell structure; water absorption rate ≤3%)8–15 years (resistant to acid, alkali & aging)May release trace phenol during production; needs eco-friendly processingGood (absorbs low & medium-frequency noise)Top-tier thermal insulation; excellent fire resistance; suitable for high-demand scenarios (e.g., chemical plants, high-rise building exterior walls)
Straw Curtain (Traditional Material)0.08–0.12Flammable (easy to ignite; rapid burning)Poor (high water absorption; prone to mildew when wet)1–2 years (easy to rot, break & be damaged by pests)Biodegradable; but requires large-scale straw resourcesGeneral (absorbs partial low-frequency noise; poor sound insulation for high frequency)Extremely low cost; renewable raw materials; suitable for temporary low-demand insulation (e.g., small rural greenhouses, temporary sheds)
