Overview
Carbon steel pipes and stainless steel pipes are widely used across
industries due to their versatility and durability. These tubular
products are manufactured to meet various international standards
and specifications. Pipes are categorized by "nominal pipe size,"
ranging from 1/8" to 72". The two primary types are seamless pipes
and welded pipes (also known as ERW - Electric Resistance Welded
pipes). Both are available in carbon steel and stainless steel. The
most common standards for carbon steel pipes include ASTM A53 for
welded pipes and ASTM A106 Grade B for seamless pipes. Stainless
steel pipes, conforming to ASTM A312, are available in seamless and
welded forms, with Grades 304 and 316 being the most widely used.
Carbon Steel Pipe
Carbon steel pipes are manufactured from steel ingots or solid tube
billets through processes such as perforation, hot rolling, cold
rolling, or cold drawing. These pipes play a critical role in
various industrial applications.
General carbon steel pipes are made from high-quality carbon steels like Grades 10, 20, 30, 35, and 45, as well as low-alloy structural steels such as 16Mn and 5MnV, or alloy steels like 40Cr, 30CrMnSi, and 45Mn2. Seamless pipes made from low-carbon steels (e.g., Grades 10 and 20) are primarily used for fluid transportation, while those made from medium-carbon steels (e.g., Grades 45 and 40Cr) are ideal for manufacturing mechanical components, including automotive and tractor parts. Carbon steel pipes undergo rigorous strength and flattening tests to ensure quality. Hot-rolled pipes are delivered in a hot-rolled or heat-treated state, while cold-rolled pipes are delivered in a heat-treated state.
Seamless Pipe
Seamless steel pipes are manufactured from a solid round steel
billet without any welding seams. Based on the production method,
seamless pipes can be classified into hot-rolled, cold-rolled,
cold-drawn, extruded, and top pipes. In terms of cross-sectional
shape, they are available in round and specialized shapes,
including square, elliptical, triangular, hexagonal, melon, star,
and finned designs. Sizes range from 4mm to 900mm in diameter.
Depending on the application, seamless pipes can be thick-walled or
thin-walled. They are commonly used in petroleum drilling,
petrochemical cracking, boiler systems, bearing manufacturing, and
high-precision structural applications in automotive, tractor, and
aerospace industries.
Galvanized steel pipes are categorized into cold-galvanized and
hot-dip galvanized pipes. Cold-galvanized pipes are now prohibited
in many applications due to environmental and health concerns,
while hot-dip galvanized pipes are still widely used in specific
industries. Since the 1960s and 1970s, developed countries have
been phasing out galvanized pipes for water supply systems. In
2000, China’s Ministry of Construction also banned galvanized pipes
for water supply applications. Today, galvanized pipes are rarely
used for cold water systems in new buildings but are occasionally
used for hot water systems. Hot-dip galvanized pipes remain popular
in firefighting, power transmission, and highway infrastructure.
Hot-Dip Galvanized Pipe
Hot-dip galvanized pipes are standard steel pipes coated with a
layer of zinc to enhance corrosion resistance. Compared to
electro-galvanizing, hot-dip galvanizing offers a thicker coating,
better durability, and a smoother surface. These pipes are
extensively used in construction, machinery, mining, chemical
processing, power generation, railway and automotive manufacturing,
highway and bridge construction, container production, sports
facilities, agricultural machinery, petroleum machinery, and
geological exploration equipment.
