Flexographic printing is ideally suited for printing on PLA-coated paper cup stock for several key reasons, which stem from the material's properties and the requirements of the packaging industry.
Compatibility with Non-Porous Substrates:
PLA (Polylactic Acid) is a bioplastic coating derived from corn starch or sugarcane. It creates a smooth, non-absorbent surface similar to traditional plastic.
Offset printing relies on the paper absorbing some moisture and the interaction between water and oil-based ink. The non-porous PLA surface prevents this, making offset unsuitable.
Flexo uses fast-drying, low-viscosity liquid inks (often water-based or UV-curable) that can adhere well and dry effectively on non-porous surfaces like PLA.
Excellent Adhesion with Flexible Inks:
Flexographic inks are formulated for flexibility and adhesion on challenging surfaces like plastic films, foils, and coated papers.
These inks bond reliably with the PLA coating, ensuring the print does not crack, peel, or rub off during the subsequent cup-forming process (where the flat fan is rolled and curled) or during use.
Ability to Use Water-Based Inks:
For food-contact items like paper cups, safety is paramount. Flexo excels at using compliant, low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) ink systems.
Water-based inks are extremely common in flexo for this application. They are odorless, non-toxic, and meet stringent food safety regulations, which is a critical advantage over many solvent-based inks used in other processes.
