ASTM A335 P5 Studded Fin Tube
ASTM A335 P5 is a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel known for its good creep strength and oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures. Its key characteristic is the nominal 5% Chromium content, which provides improved resistance to sulfur-bearing atmospheres and higher temperature strength compared to lower alloy steels.
The ASTM A335 P5 Studded Fin Tube is a high-performance thermal component where studs (pins) are welded onto the base tube to create an extended heat transfer surface. This design is particularly effective in high-temperature and abrasive environments where conventional finned tubes might be unsuitable.

Comparison with Related Grades
P5 vs. P11/P22:
P5, with ~5% Cr, offers superior oxidation resistance and
high-temperature strength compared to P11 (1.25% Cr) and P22 (2.25%
Cr), making it suitable for more severe service conditions.
P5 vs. P9/P91:
P9 (9% Cr) offers better oxidation resistance, while P91 (9% Cr
with V, Nb) provides significantly higher creep strength. P5 serves
as a cost-effective option for intermediate temperature ranges.
Key Features & Advantages
High-Temperature Strength: Maintains good mechanical strength and resistance to creep at temperatures up to approximately 600°C (1100°F).
Oxidation & Sulfidation Resistance: The 5% Cr content provides a stable protective scale, offering better resistance than carbon steel to oxidizing and sulfur-bearing environments.
Enhanced Heat Transfer: The studded design drastically increases the surface area, significantly improving heat transfer efficiency in gas-to-liquid applications.
Mechanical Durability: The welded studs create a robust structure capable of withstanding abrasive and high-gas-velocity conditions.
Proven Performance: A well-established material for high-temperature pressure service in accordance with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.
Applications of the ASTM A335 P5 Studded Tube
1.Petrochemical Heaters: Used in furnace convection and radiant sections for cracking and reforming processes.
2.Chemical Process Heaters: As heat transfer tubes in direct-fired heaters handling corrosive process streams.
3.Waste Heat Boilers: In high-temperature sections for recovering energy from process flue gases.
4.Power Generation: For specific high-temperature heat recovery systems and boiler elements.
5.Syngas Coolers: In environments where temperature and corrosion resistance are critical.
