Raw Material Melting: Sand, soda ash, and limestone are melted in a furnace at ~1700°C.
Forming: The molten glass is shaped using one of two primary methods:
Blow-and-Blow: Used for narrow-neck bottles (e.g., beer, soda). The glass is blown into a mold to create the parison (a preliminary shape), then transferred to a second mold for the final blow.
Press-and-Blow: Used for wide-mouth jars. The glass is pressed into the mold to form the parison, then blown into the final shape. This allows for more precise control over the glass distribution.
Annealing: The newly formed bottles are slowly cooled in a lehr (a temperature-controlled oven) to relieve internal stresses and strengthen the glass.
Inspection & Coating: Bottles are inspected for defects. They often receive a surface
coating (a "hot-end" and "cold-end" coat) to increase lubricity and
prevent scratches.
