Application:

The 2486A220 oil cooler is purpose-built for the Perkins T4.236 and AT4.236 turbo-charged four-cylinder diesel engines of 4.0 L swept volume, assemblies that drive Massey Ferguson 2600, 2700, 3600 and 6100 series tractors, combine harvesters such as the MF 500, 700 and 800 ranges, as well as industrial generator sets from 40 kVA to 110 kVA and forklift, loader and compressor packages built by Landini, JCB, Caterpillar, Manitou and others from the late 1980s through mid-2000s. In practice the same cooler is also fitted to the naturally-aspirated 4.236 and slightly later 4.248 derivatives when these engines are installed in the same equipment families, so the service envelope covers a broad cross-section of agricultural, materials-handling and stationary power applications worldwide.


Technical specifications:

The cooler is a 9-plate, donut-style heat exchanger centred on a stainless-steel core that slides into the 98.48 mm counterbore of the cylinder block. Overall height including the sealing flange is 78 mm, overall diameter across the shell is 114 mm, and nine internally-louvered plates provide an oil-side heat-transfer area of 342 cm². Rated heat-rejection capacity is 5.7 kW at 90 °C oil temperature and 75 °C coolant temperature under full-load conditions. Two 3/4-16 UNF female oil ports on 38 mm centres and two 5/8-18 UNF female coolant ports on 63 mm centres are machined into the pressed-steel shell, all sealed by fluorocarbon O-rings rated to 150 °C. Mounting is by four M8 threaded studs on a 60 mm pitch circle, tightening torque 22 N·m, and the assembly is supplied with a new drop-in sealing ring for immediate installation.


Material & performance features:

The plate pack is vacuum-brazed 304 stainless steel for maximum resistance to chloride corrosion from modern long-life coolants, while the outer shell is zinc-nickel passivated mild steel for additional protection against road salt and agricultural chemicals. Internal turbulator fins increase film coefficient by 12 % relative to plain-plate designs, keeping oil pressure drop below 0.35 bar at 80 °C. Every unit is pressure tested to 10 bar on both oil and coolant circuits and leak-checked with nitrogen to 5×10⁻³ mbar·l/s to ensure reliable service in continuous-duty or stop-start environments. The fluorocarbon O-rings tolerate extended drain intervals and bio-glycol blends, giving the cooler a design life exceeding 6,000 hours in severe off-highway use.
